Aslan is not a girl

Netflix is spending on the order of $300 million to film Narnia, and Meryl Streep is set to voice Aslan. John Nolte’s Breitbart report is the source. In Lewis’s books the Lion is not a girl, and he is not a costume for a studio note.

Nolte notes Aslan is the central character across the seven Narnia novels the creator of Narnia’s world and its moral order. Lewis made the Christ parallel explicit. In 1961 he wrote that the whole Narnian story is about Christ and that he pictured Christ becoming a talking beast there as He became a Man here picturing Him as a lion because the lion is king of beasts because Christ is called the Lion of Judah in the Bible and because Lewis had been dreaming of lions when he began the books. Netflix’s answer to that confession according to Nolte was to give the male lion who represents Jesus to a woman. The adaptation is set for theaters early next year with hopes of a franchise off the remaining novels and Nolte’s point is blunt: the core audience for Narnia is Christians so spending that kind of money to rewrite the Christ figure is not a marketing accident it is contempt dressed up as progress.

Being a Christian in America this week is saying Aslan is a He because Lewis said so and Scripture named the Lion first. Keep the story. Keep the Lion. And do not confuse a midterm with the least of these.
